Job Title:
Volunteer Administrator

Career overview:

I worked as the professional librarian in the library at King Edward VI School Southampton for 26 years, managing both the library and the school archives. I was dealing with pupils aged from 12 until 18 years. I am proficient with I.T. and using and maintaining websites. I have also gained a degree with the Open University.

What do you do at IYC?

I work part-time as a volunteer administrator writing letters, preparing posters, entering data and ordering stationery.

What attracted you to volunteering at IYC?

I was a fan of the television series “Secret Millionaire. The programme usually ended with joy, hugs and a lovely warm feeling. Planning to move to the centre of Totton, I looked online for a nearby charity that supported homeless people.

It’s your Choice fitted the bill nicely because it supports young people with all kinds of problems, including homelessness. Fortunately there was a vacancy for an administrative assistant.

What do you do outside of volunteering?

Art is one of my favourite past-times and I have belonged to Totton Art Society for many years. My current role is to arrange the meetings and day courses.

I enjoy painting scenes of life in the past using photographs which I have taken at re-enactment events and historical venues such as the Little Woodham Seventeenth Century Village near Gosport.

From time to time I don a costume and talk about herbal cures and superstitions to parties of schoolchildren at Little Woodham. Consequently growing herbs and medicinal weeds in my garden has become yet another interest.
