What is emotional health?

When we are physically sick, in pain or unwell it is usually very obvious and most of will see a doctor or take medication to help or cure the cause. Sometimes, we also need help emotionally too - but many people find it difficult to ask for help.

Our feelings and emotions are constantly changing though out the day, depending on the situation, people around us and our own actions or thoughts.
Anger, sadness, happiness, tearful, confused, embarrassment, depressed, hurt, boredom, love, rage, uneasy, unhappy, joy or overwhelmed are just a few of the emotions that we may feel every day. Events and changes in our life such as; family relationships, moving house, exams, change of schools, someone dieing, break up of friendships, bullying, puberty (physically becoming an adult) leaving home, starting a job can all have an effect on our emotions - and this is normal.

However, sometimes, some of these feelings become difficult for us to mange and cope with or go on for a long time - we may then need to seek help by talking to someone about it. This could be a parent, a brother or sister, a trusted teacher or youth worker, a friend or school counsellor / peer mentor. If you still feel you need help or more support talk to your doctor or try a helpline, like It's Your Choice, for more advice and options.

Remember - you are not alone and other people can / want to help you.
